With a week of World title buzz on the streets and beaches of Hossegor, It didn’t take long for a new World champion to be crowned on finals day at the #ROXYpro France! If you didn’t catch any of the action, here’s how it all went down.
It was a slow start to the day, with a lull in the swell holding off competition until late afternoon. With the event site moved further down the beach, the semi’s hit the water soon after with Hawaiian Tatiana Weston-Webb and yellow jersey rankings leader, Tyler Wright, facing off for a place in the final. Although Tatiana kept the heat close, Tyler‘s 8.33 wave towards the close of the heat saw her progress through with a total heat score of 16.40.
The World Title decider was in semi final two, with Californian, Courtney Conologue, up against 3x World Champ, Carissa Moore. Carissa’s clean and determined surfing set the tempo for the heat with an early wave scoring a 7.00, shortly followed by an 8.90. Courtney battled to narrow the gap in the final moments, but fell short with a total heat score of 15.67 to Carissa’s 15.90.
As the siren sounded, the beach erupted with applause for Tyler as she was showered with hugs and high fives.
After the #QuikPro Semis wrapped, Carissa and Tyler paddled out as the weather turned and rain began to fall on the heat of the #ROXYpro France.
Carissa wasted no time in stamping her authority on the heat with a strong opening ride of 7.33 and managed to confidently maintain her lead throughout the final. Although Tyler wasn’t able to come away with the competition win, she cheered Carissa on in the final moments of their heat from the water.
A huge congratulations to our 2016 #ROXYpro France Champion, Carissa Moore, and our new World Title holder, Tyler Wright!
