Bruna Schmitz

Bruna Schmitz turns heads both in and out of the water. Her big backhand hits and stylish forehand snaps equally match her natural, Brazilian poise as a model. She put in two years on the elite World Tour in 2009 and 2010, and Sports Illustrated showcased her beauty in the 2011 Swimsuit Issue.

Bruna grew up surfing a long, right hand wave in the small town of Matinhos, Brazil. By the age of 14, Bruna was already the youngest athlete to win a professional event in Brazil. She kicked off her pro career at the age of 15, traveling and competing internationally. In just two years, Bruna made the ASP World Tour.

Bruna is perfect spokesperson to represent her country. She is set on using her role model status to create fun, recreational opportunities for Brazil's less-fortunate city kids. Bruna remains a kid at heart and her fun-loving attitude is infectious.

Their whirlwind trip may have come to an end, but the #3Amigos are still riding the high of sun, stoke and plenty of sushi after a week of traveling around Japan. We asked Kelia to give us a recap of their adventures, her favorite #3Amigo moments from the road and a little extra insight into their lifestyle.

Read more about Kelia’s favorite moments from the land of the rising sun here:

First thing you need to know about the #3Amigos is that coffee is mandatory in the morning to get us going. This is our happy place.

We may clog your instagram feed with some serious try hard photos sometimes but there’s far more fun in the moments between what you usually see that I love way more. Some of my faves from this trip i’ve included below, keep scrolling :)

Bruna’s convinced that the 90s style bikini was made for me. I don’t exactly see what she sees but i’ll run with it anyway! What do you think?

Monzy: She’s like the sun, so bright, never dull and makes everyone happy. There’s not one bone in her body that isn’t loveable. Not to mention the most RIGGED (rigged means rocking bod) human i know. Look at that perfect smile. I LOVE this photo.

Afternoons usually land us at a beach somewhere. In this case we enjoyed the black sands of Chiba. Nothing without a little happy hour and blasting some Riri and Beyonce. You best believe there was a beach dance party soon after this photo was taken.

Chiba golden hour is quite a treat! This photo makes me so happy inside. The ocean is such a beautiful thing and when the sun sets over the sea, there’s nothing like it.

After two days cruising the Greenroom Festival in Yokohama, we were eager to explore the streets of Tokyo before heading to the coast. With just 24 hours up our sleeve in one of the most populated capital cities in the World, we initially wondered where we should begin. As it turns out, the better question was where does it end!

Rather than the group deciding on where to go, we handed the decision making to Monyca. Wherever she wanted to go, we would follow.

Take a look at our time out in Tokyo and a few of the hidden gems we loved -

Sunday PM

The famous Shibuya Crossing - Everyone loves taking a few photos here. It's a fun way to capture your Japan experience. It is absolutely packed with people and it really makes you feel small in this wild world

Shinjuku - The World's largest train station is situated in Shinjuku, so checking this area out was crazy. Fast pace, bright lights and people coming and going in all directions. We had landed our selves in the busiest part of Tokyo city. This would have to be the exact opposite way of life to my quiet and laid-back lifestyle in Hana

Harajuku - The perfect place for some retail therapy. Harajuku has everything, from high-end fashion to fun Japanese brands, you could shop for days. Plus there's plenty of adorable little coffee shops and restaurants in this area. I loved being able to see a great mix of culture and people here too.

What better way to kick off our weekend in Japan, than cruising the surf culture, art, film and music at the Greenroom Festival, along Yokohama’s historic waterfront. The two day festival gave us a chance to not only immerse ourselves amongst over 100,000 like minded salty souls but to hang out with the local fans and share some serious selfie stoke.

We asked Bruna to round up her favorite moments from the weekend and how she can best describe the experience -

Day 1

ROXY girls unite!

Postcards from Japan: #3Amigos at the Greenroom Festival

Was Japan what you expected it to be?

I've heard only good things about Japan, I love sushi and I couldn't wait to visit Japan for the first time. There is a big Japanese community in Brazil, so we learn a bit about their culture growing up. I'm over the moon with this place, the people are incredibly polite, the city is so clean and I love the street style (and obviously the food just gives that perfect final touch!).

Tell us about the surfing fans in Japan?

We did a little meet and greet at the ROXY GreenRoom booth. I knew before I came here from Kelia and Monyca, that the Japanese fans were super passionate, but experiencing it is a whole different thing. They made us feel so special, they are so thankful and sooooo happy to see us, it was adorable. The girls were so polite and lovely, my favourite new word is "Kawaii" which means cute :)

Postcards from Japan: #3Amigos at the Greenroom Festival

What's the Greenroom festival all about?

Surf, Music, and Art. I love live music, I will always find an excuse to go see bands, and I love the idea of festivals, live music during the day is my gem. The GreenRoom was such a great experience because the one thing that usually gets me at festivals is the crowd and people bumping into you, but not in Japan, people are way too nice and polite.

The people.

Top 3 must do's when in Yokohama at the Greenroom?

Check out the art gallery space. It's amazing.

Most definitely come to the ROXY booth so you can hang with the 3 amigos.

And enjoy all the live performances, our most favourite this time was Nattali Rize she rocked it!

Discovering the benefits of yoga soon after she made the move from Brazil to California, Bruna, has since dedicated herself to the power of the mat. Initially using yoga as a complementary practice to manage surf training and travel, Bruna now realizes how healing yoga can be; “I noticed that no matter how busy or how stressed I am, as soon as I walk into a yoga class my mind is settled and I feel relaxed.”

With a schedule as busy as Bruna’s who better to build us an easy 20-minute sequence that we can take just about anywhere. Enjoy!

Start in child’s pose, this is a great way to begin or end a sequence. It gently stretches your lower back, relaxes your spine, shoulders and neck plus it calms the mind. Hold here for 5 breaths.

Kick Start Your Day with Bruna's 20 Minute Yoga Flow

Move on to all fours also known as table top, preparing for cow/cat to warm up the spine. Check your alignment, stack your shoulders over your wrists and hips over knees. Engage your core.

Exhale, tuck your chin toward your chest and round your back toward the sky. Continue the flow between cow/cat for ten rounds of breath, linking one breath per movement.

Return to table top, tuck your toes and exhale, downward facing dog; send your hips high to sky. To warm up and stretch the hips, alternate bending one knee while keeping the other leg straight. Return to still down dog. Repeat 5-10 times.

Standing at the top of your mat, step your right foot back to a lunge and turn your right foot into a 90-degree angle. Stretch your arms out either side, parallel to the mat, into Warrior 2 pose. Lower your back hand onto your leg, inhale and extend the front arm up towards the sky. Hold and breathe in this pose for 4-5 breaths before swapping to the other side.

After completing reverse warrior, while still in lunge, lower your hands to either side of your forward foot, in line with your shoulders and step your forward foot back to high plank.

Lower yourself slowly to low plank, hold for one breath and glide into upward facing dog by flattening your feet to the mat and pushing your arms up. Hold for 2-3 breaths before lowering back to plank, tucking your toes under and pushing back up into down dog. Repeat these four moves 2-3 times.

This time last week we were soaking up the seemingly endless Balinese sunshine with the ROXY team - and you probably double tapped a few of Cait Miers’ awesome shots we posted on Insta.

In between surf sessions, island adventures and #BaliEcoWeekend fun we caught up with the talented Aussie born, Bali-based photographer, to discover what incredible stories were hiding behind that lens of hers, and we weren’t disappointed….

Behind the Lens with Photographer Cait Miers

How did it all start, photography?

Photography for me has kinda been only a recent thing. I dabbled in it in high school, and was always fascinated by the imagery all the top surf brands would bring out. A few years ago when I was about 16, I was on a holiday on the Gold Coast with my family and decided to sit on the rocks at Snapper with mum’s camera and take photos of surfing. I kinda fell in love with it then and there.

I’ve always admired how the surf industry operates, aligning careers with the ocean, and I grew up wanting to steer clear of a 9-5. A lover of sports, I went into a degree in Sports Science and Sports Management after high school (hoping that one day I could work with top surf athletes) but quickly realised a career like this would require way more studying than I could handle. I stuck with it for a year then something just clicked and I ended up applying for photography.

For me, going to Uni for Photography was not about getting a degree, you don’t need one to be a photographer. But I needed to learn the skills, and it really helped with that. Surf photography I’m pretty much self taught, and have learned a lot from reaching out to people around me. At the moment, my main focus is capturing women in the water, and showing their feminine, natural beauty out in the lineup.

How long have you been photographing the salty life?

When I started photography, it’s all I wanted to do. Initially I wanted to shoot more of the sports and action side of it, but as my style progressed I realised I loved the art of it more, the story behind the people in the water and those unique in-between moments better. I got my first water housing a year and a half ago, and spent the summer shooting friends and anyone I could find back home out in the water.

There’s so much freedom with just swimming out there, only attached to your camera as an extension of what you can see. I love shooting fisheye too (which gets those under/over water shots) because you’re capturing a moment you really can’t see with the naked eye. Making photography my career was a lifestyle choice. I wanted to find a way I can combine my love of surfing and the ocean, with photography, and it’s been the best choice I’ve ever made.

What was the catalyst to move from Australia to Bali for the next 6-12 months?

After finishing my Photography degree last year, I decided I needed to make a move somewhere warmer during our Winter, as there’s not too much women’s surfing going on during that time! Bali seemed like the perfect opportunity to further my fashion work as well as shooting more babes in the water, so my boyfriend (who’s also a surf photographer) and I packed up and left to chase the summer. It’s been the best thing for us, connecting with so many creatives over here! Bali is such a beautiful place and although it took a little to get settled, it’s really nice to spend a decent amount of time in the one place.

What has been the best thing about the move?

Definitely being part of the creative movement here in Bali. There are so many interesting, like-minded people taking the leap out of the normal and coming here to discover something new. A lot of the crew and expats I’ve met were born and raised here, and it’s so cool to hear their stories. Back in Aus, it’s like they teach you to go to uni and get a degree in a stable job, over here, they encourage you to be a designer or photographer or something really creative, and everyone you meet is doing that. The warm waves being a 30 second scooter ride from our house was also a GREAT incentive…. and blue skies everyday!

How was it following the ROXY team for a week?

Being part of the trip and capturing the special moments with the team was really a dream come true for me. It was cool because there were 4 of us that were 22 years old, so it was like just hanging with a bunch of girlfriends I’d known for ages! Chatting to the girls and hearing their stories, it was important for me to capture them totally in the moment. I think it’s so important to portray these women exactly how they are; beautiful, natural, feminine and extremely talented ladies. Nothing was forced, and the shooting just came really naturally.

Any highlights?

The highlights for me were getting to spend time with the girls shooting out in the water, it was so much fun. Everyone was just laughing and goofing around, cheering each other onto waves and having a ball!
