Monyca Eleogram

Monyca remembers calling her home break in Hana the "mysterious beyond," because she never seemed to make it to the lineup. Many years and accomplishments later, Monyca has undoubtedly "made it". At fourteen, Monyca's athleticism culminated, and she solidified her place in the professional world of surfing. She represented Hawaii at the '05 and '06 Quiksilver World Junior Pro and qualified for the 2007 NSSA National Finals.

However, Monyca sees surfing as something that goes beyond the competitive elements. Monyca's self-proclaimed greatest achievement is not her success as an athlete. Instead, she sees it as spending time with people she loves, and having a job that lets her surf everyday. Her life philosophy, which she embodies to a T, is "do what you love."

Monyca married her childhood sweetheart and best fried Ola on her family property in 2013. When Monyca is not modeling and traveling with the Roxy surf team she works with her husband Ola on their organic fruit farm in Hana, Maui.

It’s no secret that the Hawaiian islands are one of our favorite pieces of P A R A D I S E. We feel most at home when we visit and struggle with the concept of returning to our day to day lives when we eventually have to leave.

Imagine then, the incredible week we had on Kauai with one of the largest gatherings of #ROXYgirls to date for our Spring campaign. A magical week of not only soaking up mother natures finest but sharing stories and laughs between a team of incredible women.

Bruna and Monyca recently made a birthday pact to make this year the best year ever, and kicked it off with a trip to remember in Monyca's own backyard of Hana, Maui.

This sleepy town is situated at the end of 52 winding miles of highway, dubbed the 'Road to Hana', on which you will soak up some of the most incredible natural scenery you're likely to witness. It's where Monyca calls home, and also describes as "the greatest place on Earth".

Good friend and videographer, Tahnei Roy tagged along to capture all the fun, scroll down to see more -

Monyca's Perspective:

“It's not super often that I get my best friends to visit me from outside of Hawaii. I live in what I see as the greatest place on Earth – Hana – but it’s not the easiest place to get to. Some visitors get majorly car-sick, others drive right through and don't know what they've missed. So when my friends make the two-hour windy cliff-side drive to see me in Hana, I do my best to ensure we have the most amazing time ever.

Hidden Hana with Monyca and Bruna

When Bruna’s flights were booked, I couldn't wait to start planning out the trip. We both turned 27 this year and were intent on making this our best year yet…Duh! And we also wanted it to be our fittest! So I made sure to add in some fitness-oriented activities to the agenda.I had never taken Bruna to the hike at 'Ohe'o Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) before, or to see the bamboo forest. It's far enough to get a good sweat going, and it’s completely stunning the whole way.

When we arrived, I realized I forgot my shoes but in true Bruna fashion she suggested we do the hike anyway. Sooo, we both ended up trekking the entire 4-mile hike (up, and down) barefoot. I have to admit, it was a little painful at times, but feeling the damp earth beneath our feet and the mud between our toes made us feel connected with Mama Earth. We loved it."

Hidden Hana with Monyca and Bruna

"The two pinnacles of the hike for us were Waimoku Falls waterfall and the bamboo forest. The forest is always lit in the dreamiest way. The sun shines through the tall trees and invites you to just put your arms out and embrace it. The sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo is captivating. When you arrive at Waimoku Waterfall, you almost can’t believe that what you’re seeing is real. The cliff is so tall and the trail of water streaming from the peak falls so far that the whole valley seems to be filled with mist! You can feel it standing more than 200 feet away. It’s glorious!

There is no swimming hole beneath the waterfall so after the long hike we couldn't wait to jump in the water. We went for a quick cliff jump, then grabbed our longboards and went for a surf. We shared a bunch of party waves, and tried our hardest to get to the nose before falling, cracking up, and doing it again. What an experience!

From Mauka to Makai (mountain to ocean) we took in all of Mother Nature's energy and beauty she offered us."

Bruna's Perspective:

“The very first time I stepped foot in Hana, I felt something magical. I remember thinking to myself: “This is where fairytales are made.” There is nothing like the feeling of landing on an island and being welcomed by the warmth, the wind, and the palm trees.

The drive to Hana starts in the sun. Once you get closer, you start to experience this feeling of entering somewhere untouched, pure, and mysterious.

You drive along the mountain on a cliff, and if you weren’t paying attention you could just drive through. Of course, I choose to stay because my best friend in the whole world happens to be right there, in the heart of Hana. You only experience Hana if you stay in Hana. My best friend Monyca’s life is like a romantic novel: she has a farm with her husband, both are local surfers born and raised there. Theirs is a childhood love. Now married, the two are growing beautiful organic fruits and vegetables."

Hidden Hana with Monyca and Bruna

"Every time I visit, Monz takes me somewhere different. I feel like I should know all of the places there by now, but I don’t. This time, we traveled to the bamboo forest and Waimoku Falls. My mind was absolutely blown to pieces. The waterfall was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s the most powerful form of nature I’ve ever experienced and so incredibly humbling. The pressure of the water falling down this giant cliff and the wind that blows as you get closer is terrifying and peaceful at the same time.

Oh, Hana. I love this place so much! The whole plane ride back home to the “Main Land” I couldn’t stop daydreaming about moving there one day with my husband and leaving everything behind to live this real-life fairytale.”

Late last year we packed our bags (including some very thick wetsuits) and headed as far north as our travels have ever taken us, into the arctic circle and into the dramatic scenery of Norway’s Lofoten Islands. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure delivered a chance to see the Northern lights, soak up some Viking heritage and score a few icy Scandinavian waves.

Rather than we tell you about it, we asked Mainei Kinimaka to break it down for you.

A #ROXYSneakPeek Behind our Photoshoot in Norway with Mainei Kinimaka

After the ROXY Pro France last October, Steph, Kelia, Monyca and I went on a European adventure I’ll never forget. Our travels took us from Northern Norway’s sub-zero temperatures of the arctic circle to the desert heat of the Canary Islands. This was my first ever international shoot with ROXY, so I brought along my camera to document our journey. There are too many moments to count that were amazing, crazy, and hilarious, but here are some of my favorites!

You know the saying, “It’s about the journey, not the destination?”. This was absolutely the case on our way to Unstad, Norway. After 4 flights, we arrived in the small town of Bodo. From here, our entire crew walked through the town from the airport to the dock, where we would take a ferry to the Lofoten Islands.

1. On our way to the dock we stopped to have breakfast at the only restaurant in town, a tiny orange building on a jedi serving up freshly made heart-shaped waffles with berries and syrup. It was an adorable little spot with lots of friendly locals who gave it a homey feel. These were the best waffles I’ve ever had and maybe ever will.

2. The four hour ferry ride from Bodo to the Lofoten islands was simply breathtaking. The ship was beautiful so we did some shooting on the bow as we sailed passed an abundance of tiny islands, and the sea was the glassiest I’ve ever seen. On one side of the ship we could watch the sun setting over the lofoten islands, and on the other side we could watch the full moon rising over the sea.

3. After driving from the dock we reached the tiny town of Unstad. We were warmly welcomed by the family at the Arctic Surf Camp, and after dinner we stepped outside to witness the most amazing sight, the northern lights! Our entire crew was in awe and we yelled in excitement at every bright green flare that appeared in the sky. I still can’t believe how lucky we were to see the northern lights only about an hour into arriving in the arctic circle.

4. Surfing in the arctic circle was something I’d never imagine myself doing. The beach was covered in ice and frost, so we suited up in our 6 ml wetsuits with booties and hoods. Just walking across our lawn to the shore turned my feet completely numb. It was freezing but so worth it!

5. By far one of the weirdest, but funniest, experiences we had on our trip to norway happened late at night on our last day in Unstad. It was nearly 1am at night and all the girls were in our rooms, jokingly talking about norwegian ghost stories and tales of trolls. Steph was really riling us all up about it so we all decided to put on our coats and walk around town looking for the “little people”. The minute we step out of our rooms to go down stairs we hear a pounding on our door and we absolutely freak out, screaming and running back up stairs. Sis runs into her room, locks her door, and calls her husband, Joe. Steph, mons, and I have our moment of courage and walk down stairs to see what’s there. It may sound like we were over reacting, but you have to understand that Unstad is in the middle of nowhere, and our house was on the beach, a fair distance from the rest of the town. Only about 30 people live there and they were definitely all sound asleep by now, so who could be knocking at our door in the middle of the night?

We cautiously open the door to find a group of teenagers eagerly standing on our doorstep. After some explaining (and teasing about our screams upstairs) we found out that they were all attending a gap year program in the lofoten islands where you learn how to surf. They said they saw our posts on instagram and knew exactly which house we were staying in because it was the only one with a trampoline on the lawn. They drove for hours, all the way to Unstad to come meet us and invite us to go night surfing with them. It was one of the coolest moments ever. I got to meet all of these norwegian girls my age who were so passionate and committed to surfing that they put on those huge wetsuits every day to surf in arctic waters, even at night!

Wander the Pacific. Ride a reef pass. Settle into the sand and soak in the sun.

Our latest #POPsurf collection draws its printspiration from honored Japanese woodblock and Polynesian tapa cloth prints that call directly to our mountain and wave heritage.

The subtle blend of peachy nudes, contrasting indigo and soda blues, complement the light neoprenes, daring cuts and perforated details for a true balance of performance style in the surf.

We’ve created these stand out styles for long beach days where you’ll catch your wave of the day and kick out smiling.

Just as leaves fall and temperatures drop in the South, the days get longer and the sun shines higher in the North. Where would you go? Choose your adventure with our new Destination Paradise collection. We find paradise wherever we are. We’re happy in Hawaii surfing Waikiki (but really, who isn’t?!) as much as in San Francisco looking for waves in some unlikely spots.

London based illustrator and self titled ‘professional doodler’, Hattie Stewart, lent her fun and quirky, cartoon-esque style to our latest exclusive snow outerwear collaboration, giving a fresh hit of bold color to the slopes this season.

Best known for her ‘doodle bombs’, featuring her vibrant and playful characters drawn over magazine covers and fashion photography, Hattie’s art can now be found on taxi’s, album covers and counts Kylie Minogue, Marc Jacobs and Henry Holland as fans.

We recently caught up with Hattie to hear more about her work and what inspired the collection -

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie StewartImage courtesy of Silvia Olsen

How did you get started in illustration?

Illustrating generally has always been the thing that gives me my sense of calm and purpose. I've drawn from a very young age. Over the years, and especially through my education I have experimented with many different creative avenues – photography and fashion being two examples. However I always came back to doodling and drawing – it's what has always underpinned my creativity. As my work has developed and my confidence has grown I've been able to take my drawing style into new territory, it's been applied to photography and I've worked within fashion. The term 'doodlebombing', which has been used to describe my work, it essentially a play on words. It came about when 'photo bombing' became a phenomenon – and it's stuck ever since.

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie Stewart

How would you describe your creative process?

It’s pretty organic but depends entirely on mood and project. Predominantly I give myself a bit of time to think things through and then I get straight to drawing - usually for hours at a time. I like to work straight without interruption.

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie Stewart

What was your inspiration in the ROXY collection?

Just to create something colourful, fun and expressive - just like the talented athletes wearing the pieces.

What’s the most exciting part of a collaboration?

Seeing my designs in action on Olympic Snowboarder Aimee Fuller. So cool.

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie Stewart

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie Stewart

What’s the best advice you’ve been given or that your would give?

Don't get mad, get drawing. If someone doesn't appreciate you today, keep working because they might do tomorrow – but always remember, deep down, the work you create has to be for yourself and you only.

Behind the Collab - Meet Hattie Stewart

Do you get a kick out of seeing your work on people on the street/on the slopes?

Oh definitely. I’ve had a number of low days and then I’ll see my work in situ and feel a little buzz again. Seeing it on the slopes though that’s something new for me and seeing such awesome female athletes wearing my work is so cool.. women who are working to the top of their own fields and are crossing paths along the way is one of the reasons I love what I do. Hopefully they’ll teach me to snowboard one day, always wanted to try it..

What’s next?

Hopefully getting out on the slopes. Until then though I’m off to Sri Lanka for 3 weeks and will continue to draw..
