Torah Bright

Torah Bright exists in a category all of her own. A snow lover since birth, Torah was skiing at age 2 and by 11, she had broken into the snowboarding scene. Torah joined the Roxy team in 1999 and has gone on to dominate competitions around the world, including the TTR World Tour, Global Open Series, FIS World Cups, Winter X Games, and of course, podium finishes at two Winter Olympics, taking home the gold in 2010 and silver medal in 2014. She splits her time between her home in Salt Lake City, her training ground of New Zealand, and her homeland of Australia.

In 2011, Torah focused on backcountry riding and added big powder jumps, steep lines, and snowmobile rallying to her already formidable arsenal. And in 2013, she dropped back into the contest scene with force - this time attacking half pipe, slope style and snowboard cross. After a successful start to her 2014 season with a Dew Tour win, Torah went on to become the first and only person in the world to qualify and compete in three snowboard events at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, taking home a silver medal in half pipe in the process.

There’s nothing like the feeling when you arrive at a new destination for a fresh adventure.

Hours after stepping off the plane in Bali, not only was the sea calling the ROXY team but they also took the chance to relax and explore their new home for the next few days.

Torah and Monyca took full advantage of their first morning by hitting the studio at Four Seasons Bali and trying something new, anti gravity yoga. With a busy weekend ahead at #RUNSUPYOGA Jimbaran Bay, combined with #BaliEcoWeekend activities, the girls decided to hang in silk hammocks and stretch out some sore (and a little jet lagged) muscles.

What a way to start a stay!

Monyca and Torah enjoyed a private lesson, giving them a chance to bend, swing, hang, stretch and relax as they soaked up the beautiful gardens and soft sounds of waves at Jimbaran Bay.

Aside from Torah Bright’s ever-growing list of accomplishments on the slopes, there’s no denying her impeccable style. This will be her 7th season of designing her own snow outerwear range: ROXY Bright Edition.

Torah blends street style fits with a feminine twist, mixed with ROXY’s technical outerwear know-how and you have the perfect balance of form and function.

We caught up with Torah to find out where her inspiration comes from and what she loves most about designing her own range.

Behind the Bright Edition

What are the new trends you have added to your Bright Edition this season?

I honestly have nothing in mind when I start the process but I love how organic it is. I have always loved floral prints, two collections ago I had another floral print that I loved.

This collection I think the colour and how it almost looks tie-dyed. The print is iridescent, it’s beautiful. That print came from seeing a dress in a magazine and I was like, the colours, the floral, it's beautiful - how can we do this?!

You have a relaxed and effortless style both on and off the slopes, where do you get your style inspiration?

When I look for inspiration for the outerwear I don't look for anything in particular, I just let it come to me. There's no method to the madness. I'll be online and browsing my favourite designers or flipping through fashion magazines as i'm travelling and i'll tear out pages, so it comes from all different places. So when I deliver my inspiration to the designers, I've written all over everything - I like this colour, I like this cut, I like this button, I really like the neck of this coat. The ROXY designers then translate my inspiration into an outerwear piece.

So you like to bring some street influence to the snow?

The style on the street is a big influence. I like it to be worn from the street to the bar at night. For me living out of a bag - I can't always bring a nice coat, I don't have the room! So I will wear a ski jacket out at night instead.

Behind the Bright Edition

The diamante trims have become a hallmark of your range, how did that begin?

The diamantes stemmed from the goggle I wore during the 2006 Olympics. The ROXY team asked what I wanted on my goggles, easy - diamonds! I had as many swarovski crystals that could fit.

We've toned it down a little since then but those kind of touches just adds to the continuity between the collections over the years. Also, as I'm a female on the mountain I want to feel like a female out there. I want it to be very feminine, luxurious and glamorous. So I feel like keeping those subtle details is that little piece of glamour to take out on the mountain.

How do you contribute functional ideas as a snowboarder to the ROXY design team?

ROXY has always taken input from the riders, more so from the function. Our feedback and input can be quite valuable, as we're out on the mountain everyday. It’s easy research and development, we get the first samples and then we let them know if we have any feedback or if anything isn't really working. It's a fun process, and it's the subtle tweaks that we help to make a difference eg. the pockets might be in an awkward spot, the level of waterproofing of the fabrics.

Do you get a little buzz when you see girls out on the mountain in your gear?

Yeah I do! I get so excited when I see my gear on the mountain. What makes me really excited is seeing some of my older collections still out there. My very first collection, it was called something different. So when I see those coats out on the snow, I get a real kick. It's awesome!

Both Torah Bright (Snowboard Superpipe) and Dara Howell (Ski Slopestyle) received bronze medals at the X games!

Torah Bright, our Roxy team snowboarder and 2014 Olympic silver medalist, finished on the podium in third place at the 2015 X Games in women’s snowboard superpipe. Under the lights at Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain, Bright was up against the amplitude of Chloe Kim and Kelly Clark, who finished in first and second, respectively. Bright’s technical first run began with a McTwist, followed by an air to fakie, switch cab 720 and frontside 540. She ended with a stylish alley-oop frontside 360 to gain a score of 78.33 that held her in third place for the remainder of the event.

Dara Howell, Roxy team skier and 2014 Olympic gold medalist, took third place at the 2015 X Games in women’s ski slopestyle. With cloud cover creating a flat light that made for slight difficulties on the course, the field of top female freeskiers from around the world brought their best to the slopestyle course on Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain.

Sitting in fifth place going into her third and final run, Howell had only one chance to pull together a run with enough technical skill and style to break into the top three. After hitting the first rail feature and wall ride with clean landings, Canada’s Olympic heroine launched into the jump line with a string of stylish spins, including a rodeo 540 and switch rodeo 720.

Congratulations girls!

Torah takes us through her favorite surf memories and how she started.

Torah Bright Surf vs Snow

When did you catch the surfing bug?

We would spend a lot of time on the beach as kids but always body surfing and boogie boarding. It wasn't until I was with Roxy that I had tried surfing at one of the Roxy learn to surf days. The next time I went surfing was in Fiji, for the Roxy Pro. It was after the 2006 Olympics and I just went to soak up the sun with the Roxy team. I got to surf with all the rad Roxy team riders and at the time Carissa Moore's dad was pushing me onto waves, helping me out. I was out on boats getting jet-ski rides, catching a wave then getting jet ski rides back out. It was the best first experience that anybody could ever have. And Fiji is paradise, it's my happy place, it is heaven. Good memories!

Was surfing something you had always wanted to try?

The learn to surf day sparked some interest. I've always been a beach girl at heart, and now when I have a break - you'll find me at the beach. Every year now I head off on a boat trip. It had been Costa Rica for a few years and this year was my second time to Nicaragua. I try and fit in a few sneaky winter surfs while I'm home in Australia.

How much fun was your time in Maui with Roxy team rider Monyca Eleogram?

We had SO much fun! My friend lives on the other side of the island to Monyca, so we called her and said we were coming to visit. We surfed and then stayed with Monyca on her beautiful avocado farm, it was awesome. That's living out there!

Ahhh too much fun exploring Hana with local @monycaeleogram & @juliamancuso

With your busy training schedule, how do you find time to catch a few waves?

It's all about balance. Life is about balance. For me surfing in rejuvenating, you could say it's cross training but only dependent on your dedication. You surf three times a day you do get fit from surfing and being active, but for me it's more of a rejuvenation, to be in the sun and in the ocean and surfing, I love it. It's a necessary part of being happy for me.

Where are your favorite surf spots?

Nicaragua has definitely been a highlight. It was the best combination of great waves, great location and great group. A really fun group to hang out with.

Waiting for waves and exploring the reef below!

Loving Lost in Japan

It’s born inside all of us. Wanderulust. That feeling. That pull. That restless tickle in our feet, always whispering "Keep it moving." That rush of adrenaline that gets us out of bed, and out of our comfort zones. Sending us out to climb waves and mountains alike. In search of the next ride. The next thrill. The next evolutions of us. Bowing at the altar of “Yes.” And embracing the unknown with open arms. Both in the world, and in ourselves. Always wandering. Always wondering. Always open to whatever comes next. Shedding old skins for new. While seeking peace in madness and zen in the middle of a storm. Where foreign becomes familiar, and being a stranger isn't strange at all. Because home is a mindset. And getting lost is where you get found.

Loving Lost in Japan

We loved getting lost in Japan, the location of our Holiday 2014 photoshoot featuring ROXY snow team riders Torah Bright and Dara Howell and ROXY surfer Monyca Eleogram. We admired the beauty of the Lake Toya Island temple, which is housed on the same island as an active volcano! Torah and Dara had a great day hitting the backcountry of Shribetsu Dake and Rusutsu mountains. And when we were ready to wind down each night, you could find us at our favorite sushi spot in Hirafu, A-Bu-Cha Restaurant.
