Torah Bright

Torah Bright exists in a category all of her own. A snow lover since birth, Torah was skiing at age 2 and by 11, she had broken into the snowboarding scene. Torah joined the Roxy team in 1999 and has gone on to dominate competitions around the world, including the TTR World Tour, Global Open Series, FIS World Cups, Winter X Games, and of course, podium finishes at two Winter Olympics, taking home the gold in 2010 and silver medal in 2014. She splits her time between her home in Salt Lake City, her training ground of New Zealand, and her homeland of Australia.

In 2011, Torah focused on backcountry riding and added big powder jumps, steep lines, and snowmobile rallying to her already formidable arsenal. And in 2013, she dropped back into the contest scene with force - this time attacking half pipe, slope style and snowboard cross. After a successful start to her 2014 season with a Dew Tour win, Torah went on to become the first and only person in the world to qualify and compete in three snowboard events at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, taking home a silver medal in half pipe in the process.

Steph #1

That’s right…5x ASP Women’s World Tour Champion & ROXY team rider, Stephanie Gilmore was voted #1 on ESPN’s list of the top 50 female athletes in action sports!

Stephanie Gilmore came out swinging in 2014. After a lackluster, injury-plagued season that saw her slide down the ASP ratings to an uncharacteristic fifth in 2013, Stephanie proved she’s just as much a competitive threat as ever, dominating the ROXY Pro Gold Coast to take the first event of the new year. She is currently tied for 1st place on the Women’s World Championship Tour with Carissa Moore.

Transcending surfing, Gilmore is also an ESPY winner, as well as a Laureus World Sports Award recipient.

Torah and Dara Dream Big

All of our Roxy athletes inspire us, but this winter two riders in particular have really been moving mountains. 19-year-old freeskier Dara Howell only just recently joined the Roxy team, and she has not wasted any time getting down to business. Four years ago Dara was inspired to start freeskiing when she saw a photo of Sarah Burke. Sarah was a pioneer of her sport, and while she passed away in January 2012, skiers like Dara have done a great job of furthering the progression that Sarah established. In the last year Dara was on the podium at 5 World Cup events and won 2 X-Games Bronze medals. But Dara really made her mark when earlier this month at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games she won the Gold Medal in the first ever Olympics ski slopestyle event. In a fitting move, Dara dedicated the award to Sarah, both for the groundbreaking skier that she was and for all she did to get freeskiing admitted into the Olympics.

Like Dara, Torah Bright also spent the last year breaking boundaries. In January of 2013, this 2010 Olympic halfpipe Gold Medalist decided to tackle 3 snowboard disciplines: halfpipe, slopestyle and snowboard cross. While she’d been riding halfpipe and slopestyle for years, she was a completely inexperienced in snowboard cross. She worked hard all year training and competing in as many events as she could. Many said she couldn’t do it, that she was spreading herself too thin, but Torah proved them wrong. Over the course of the year she won the Dew Tour halfpipe, a World Cup halfpipe, received 3rd in the World Championships of slopestyle, and placed in the top ten at a World Cup snowboard cross event. In January of this year all her hard work paid off when she became the first and only person ever to qualify for 3 Olympic snowboard disciplines. Torah put on a grand performance at the 2014 Sochi Games, placing 7th in slopestyle, holding her own on the snow cross course, and winning a Silver Medal in the halfpipe event.

Congratulations Torah and Dara and thank you for all that you do, you lift us up with your courage and show us that anything is possible!

Roxy Team Rider, 25-year old Torah Bright received The Medal of the Order of Australia on Australia Day 26th January 2012 for service to sport as a Gold Medallist at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

The Medal of the Order of Australia is awarded to individuals nominated by the community whose achievements are deemed 'worthy of recognition' by the Order of Australia Council.

The Cooma local heard the news whilst in Salt Lake City, where she currently resides: "I am hugely honoured to be receiving this Medal of Honour! I know there are many people deserving and perhaps more deserving than I to receive this award. I am so thrilled and overwhelmed with joy for this, thank you!” says Torah. Also a former TTR Tour World Champion, Torah has been signed to Roxy since the aged of 13. A globally recognized athlete, she was the first Roxy rider to launch her own signature collection, the Roxy Bright Edition in 2009. She is also a two-time Winter X Games gold medallist in the snowboard half pipe.
