Dara Howell

Dara Howell was born to compete. This Ontario, Canada native was a successful competitive figure skater before she even stepped into her first pair of twin tips. Looking for a new challenge, at the age of 15 Dara saw a photo of Sarah Burke and was moved to action.

Sarah’s groundbreaking freeskiing pursuits inspired Dara to swap her skates for skis, and head down the trail Sarah blazed. From the beginning Dara was a natural on freeskis and quickly landed herself at the top of podiums. Now, after a mere three years as a competitive skier, she has an Olympic Gold Medal and has accumulated countless podium finishes around the world.

Round 2 resumed this morning at the #ROXYpro France, with 6x World Champ Stephanie Gilmore facing off against Hawaiian, Malia Manuel.

After a slow start, Steph tucked into a clean barrel and scored the highest wave score of the afternoon with an 8.83.

It came down to a close finish in the final minutes of the heat, Steph taking the win and progressing to Round 3 with a 13.50 to Malia’s 13.40

After a string of lay days, the #ROXYpro kicked off yesterday in pumping Hawaiian-style conditions at Les Culs Nus beach, near Hossegor. The girls made the most of the epic swell, scoring barrel rides and the first perfect 10 of the competition.

If you missed any of the action, here are our highlights -

Day 1 of the #ROXYpro France

Heat one opened with a bang! Tour rookie; Tatiana Weston-Webb claimed the day’s standout performance against Bianca Buitendag and fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon, getting pitted in a beautiful set wave barrel and scoring the first perfect 10 of the comp.

The beach was buzzing in the lead up to heat 4, as 6x World Champion Stephanie Gilmore pulled on a comp jersey for the first time since April, at the Margaret River pro. With a tough match up against World number 2, Carissa Moore, Steph struggled to match Carissa’s momentum, coming away with a 12.66 to Moore’s 18.77.

Both Torah Bright (Snowboard Superpipe) and Dara Howell (Ski Slopestyle) received bronze medals at the X games!

Torah Bright, our Roxy team snowboarder and 2014 Olympic silver medalist, finished on the podium in third place at the 2015 X Games in women’s snowboard superpipe. Under the lights at Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain, Bright was up against the amplitude of Chloe Kim and Kelly Clark, who finished in first and second, respectively. Bright’s technical first run began with a McTwist, followed by an air to fakie, switch cab 720 and frontside 540. She ended with a stylish alley-oop frontside 360 to gain a score of 78.33 that held her in third place for the remainder of the event.

Dara Howell, Roxy team skier and 2014 Olympic gold medalist, took third place at the 2015 X Games in women’s ski slopestyle. With cloud cover creating a flat light that made for slight difficulties on the course, the field of top female freeskiers from around the world brought their best to the slopestyle course on Aspen’s Buttermilk Mountain.

Sitting in fifth place going into her third and final run, Howell had only one chance to pull together a run with enough technical skill and style to break into the top three. After hitting the first rail feature and wall ride with clean landings, Canada’s Olympic heroine launched into the jump line with a string of stylish spins, including a rodeo 540 and switch rodeo 720.

Congratulations girls!

Loving Lost in Japan

It’s born inside all of us. Wanderulust. That feeling. That pull. That restless tickle in our feet, always whispering "Keep it moving." That rush of adrenaline that gets us out of bed, and out of our comfort zones. Sending us out to climb waves and mountains alike. In search of the next ride. The next thrill. The next evolutions of us. Bowing at the altar of “Yes.” And embracing the unknown with open arms. Both in the world, and in ourselves. Always wandering. Always wondering. Always open to whatever comes next. Shedding old skins for new. While seeking peace in madness and zen in the middle of a storm. Where foreign becomes familiar, and being a stranger isn't strange at all. Because home is a mindset. And getting lost is where you get found.

Loving Lost in Japan

We loved getting lost in Japan, the location of our Holiday 2014 photoshoot featuring ROXY snow team riders Torah Bright and Dara Howell and ROXY surfer Monyca Eleogram. We admired the beauty of the Lake Toya Island temple, which is housed on the same island as an active volcano! Torah and Dara had a great day hitting the backcountry of Shribetsu Dake and Rusutsu mountains. And when we were ready to wind down each night, you could find us at our favorite sushi spot in Hirafu, A-Bu-Cha Restaurant.

Torah and Dara Dream Big

All of our Roxy athletes inspire us, but this winter two riders in particular have really been moving mountains. 19-year-old freeskier Dara Howell only just recently joined the Roxy team, and she has not wasted any time getting down to business. Four years ago Dara was inspired to start freeskiing when she saw a photo of Sarah Burke. Sarah was a pioneer of her sport, and while she passed away in January 2012, skiers like Dara have done a great job of furthering the progression that Sarah established. In the last year Dara was on the podium at 5 World Cup events and won 2 X-Games Bronze medals. But Dara really made her mark when earlier this month at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games she won the Gold Medal in the first ever Olympics ski slopestyle event. In a fitting move, Dara dedicated the award to Sarah, both for the groundbreaking skier that she was and for all she did to get freeskiing admitted into the Olympics.

Like Dara, Torah Bright also spent the last year breaking boundaries. In January of 2013, this 2010 Olympic halfpipe Gold Medalist decided to tackle 3 snowboard disciplines: halfpipe, slopestyle and snowboard cross. While she’d been riding halfpipe and slopestyle for years, she was a completely inexperienced in snowboard cross. She worked hard all year training and competing in as many events as she could. Many said she couldn’t do it, that she was spreading herself too thin, but Torah proved them wrong. Over the course of the year she won the Dew Tour halfpipe, a World Cup halfpipe, received 3rd in the World Championships of slopestyle, and placed in the top ten at a World Cup snowboard cross event. In January of this year all her hard work paid off when she became the first and only person ever to qualify for 3 Olympic snowboard disciplines. Torah put on a grand performance at the 2014 Sochi Games, placing 7th in slopestyle, holding her own on the snow cross course, and winning a Silver Medal in the halfpipe event.

Congratulations Torah and Dara and thank you for all that you do, you lift us up with your courage and show us that anything is possible!
